More flooding possible in Richmond: How you can prepare
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- With the possibility of heavy rain from afternoon thunderstorms through Monday, July 14, and the ground still soaking from earlier storms, there's a big risk for more flooding in the Richmond area.
8News heard from residents who experienced flooding after storms on Wednesday, July 9. One woman, Bernadette Bennet, who lives in Richmond, said it's not the first time she's experienced a flash flood.
"It basically happens every time we get a hard rain," Bennet said.
Bennet shared a video of the ditch in front of her home filled with water, something she expects with major storms, and a familiar scene for many homes during downpours.
The City of Richmond said residents can do their part to prevent flooding by keeping storm drains clear of trash, leaves and other debris. If drains are blocked, even minor rain events can create property damage or driving hazards.
"You never know what'll happen when it's pitch black out here," Bennet said.
Bennet said she's seen cars get into trouble on her road when it's flooded.
"Especially when you can't see, you're gonna run into some deep water," Bennet said.

The city said it is preparing for heavy rain in the forecast. It is deploying crews from the departments of Public Utilities and Public Works to inspect and clear storm drains in known trouble spots, and put up signage where there might be hazards.
Bennet said those crews have been helpful.
"When they know it's going to rain really hard, they actually come the day before and then they start cleaning the ditch out to see what kind of debris they have," Bennet said.
Bennet said with more rain coming this week, she expects to see a similar scene in her neighborhood.
"Well of course, we know it's gonna get flooded again. If we had that hard rain, yes," Bennet said.
