More than 100,000 speeding citations issued in Richmond school zones in 2025
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Police Department has released new data showing drivers continue to speed through school zones at alarming rates across the city.
In 2025 alone, more than 102,350 speeding citations were mailed to drivers caught by school zone safety cameras. Those citations total nearly 6.4 million dollars in fines, with $3,045,090 still unpaid.
River City Middle School recorded the highest number of citations, with 34,199 issued to drivers in 2025. Richmond High School for the Arts followed with 14,986 citations, while George Wythe High School and Frances McClenny Elementary School also ranked among the most ticketed locations with 12,419.
When combined with 2024 data, River City Middle School and Richmond High School for the Arts remain among the top locations citywide for speeding violations.
Police said the numbers highlight ongoing safety concerns during school arrival and dismissal times.
In front of Mary Munford Elementary School, 2,973 in 2025. During the 2025 Crime Briefing, Richmond Police announced both safety cameras previously located at Westover Hills Elementary School will be relocated to Mary Munford Elementary.
According to police, data showed the Cary Street Road area near Mary Munford posed a higher traffic safety risk, while Westover Hills Elementary consistently recorded the lowest number of violations with 364 violations.
Safety cameras operate on school days during designated morning and afternoon hours, depending on the school location. Warning signs and flashers are posted at each site to alert drivers when cameras are active.
Times are as follows:
- 7:15 a.m. - 9:15 a.m. or 7:45 a.m. – 9:45 a.m.
- 2:15 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. or 2:45 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.
Richmond Police are reminding drivers to slow down and stay alert in school zones, especially during arrival and dismissal hours, to help keep students and staff safe.
