‘More than just a stage’: Allianz Amphitheater hosts soft launch Sunset Soundcheck

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The long-awaited Allianz Amphitheater is finally opening its gates -- and Richmond is ready.

“Our first show is Saturday with Rick Springfield,” said General Manager Rebecca Street. “So that’s going to be super fun.”

Ahead of the venue’s grand opening this Saturday, June 7, city leaders, community members and the team behind the project gathered Wednesday, June 4 for a soft opening filled with music and celebration.

Students from St. Andrew’s School in Oregon Hill were the first to take the stage, helping break in the amphitheater as its inaugural performers.

"I am going to remember this for my whole life," said one of the students.

The students gave people a sneak peak into what the amphitheater will look like on opening day.

Street said the project has been in the works for over a year, and the vision for the venue goes well beyond entertainment.

“The theater is more than just a stage,” she said. “It's a first-of-its-kind, intimate amphitheater designed specifically for this community, with stunning views of the James River [and the] downtown skyline.”

Later Wednesday night, three local bands took to the stage, and people filled the lot.

Located along the canal near the historic Tredegar Iron Works, the design team aimed to preserve the area’s historic character -- something local officials say was an essential part of the process.

“This is a place that we can be proud of,” said Mayor Danny Avula. “We can not only see great acts and have great parties, but also, you know, develop some revenue.”

The amphitheater features three bars and a rotating selection of local Richmond food trucks.

“We listened closely to our neighbors,” Street said. “And what we heard was a desire for something locally grounded and full of soul. Today, with the opening of Allianz Amphitheater, we take that vision and bring it to life with world-class music, unforgettable experiences, and a commitment to being a long-term partner with the city.”

Doors open for the first show at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 7 -- tickets can be purchased here.'
