Neighbors voice concerns over tall grass at Richmond’s Libbie Hill Park

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Overgrown grass at Richmond's Libbie Hill Park is causing neighbors to voice their concern. A city spokesperson attributed the overgrowth to large amounts of rainfall that have delayed maintenance services.
On Tuesday, July 22, many areas of grass at Richmond's Libbie Hill Park appeared to be multiple feet high, particularly overgrown near a popular set of steps commonly used for exercise.
One city resident, Ivery Bryant, described the overgrowth near the steps, where he often works out.
"It has been a time when it's been slivers, but it's never been this bad," Bryant said. "We have pieces of grass and vegetation that's grown as tall as I am coming over to the steps."

The same issue occurred in August of 2019, which left nearby residents feeling frustrated.
8News reached out to the city to learn why the grass hadn't been cut, which a spokesperson said was due to delays caused by recent rainfall.
"During periods of severe storms with extreme heat and rainfall, our core services can be severely impacted," a city spokesperson said. "Excessive rain causes delays in trash collection and grass maintenance due to wet terrain, overgrown vegetation, public and private storm debris adding more weight during trash, bulk and brush collection. We ask for your patience and understanding as our dedicated employees continue to work and perform under extreme conditions. Again, we appreciate your patience and thank you for helping to keep our communities clean."
The spokesperson has not yet shared when the grass maintenance will be completed.
