Neighbors weigh in on intersection changes set to take place on Roseneath Road
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Drivers in Richmond's Museum District will notice a big change at two busy intersections on Patterson Avenue and Kensington Avenue.
Starting on Monday, April 14, construction will begin to remove traffic signals on Roseneath Road, the signals will soon be replaced with all-way stop signs.
Several neighbors shared their reaction to the switch, with many expressing that this would be a smart move for safety.
"I think it's a wonderful idea because there's a lot of cars that come by, they fly, they don't stop at all," said Kevin Arias.
With the interstate nearby some neighbors told 8News that speeding has become a serious concern. "I think it's a good measure to take, just because of how fast people come when they get off the interstate, it's really dangerous," said Ellie Bolton.
The stop signs will be installed over the next week and the existing traffic signals are set to flash red to alert drivers of the change and help create a smoother transition.
"As with any new traffic laws, you know, there is going to be an adjustment period [because] you're so used to driving in the same neighborhoods with the same stop signs and stoplights," said Bolton.
The city said the switch is part of their continued efforts to improve safety, but there's still some skepticism about whether it'll make a difference. "Some people - not a whole lot - will get impatient or decide that they can just run right through it," said Mark Herman.
While neighbors are eager to see the effects of the changes, they had an important message for drivers approaching the new signs.
"Don't roll through... stop enough that you can make sure it's safe to go through," Arias shared.
Bolton also echoed the same sentiments, "Actually stop... because people sometimes don't even listen to the stop signs, but I feel like this would be a better prevention," he said.
The city said the construction will take place over the next few days, so they've asked drivers to slow down and give workers some extra space.
