New details in deadly assault of Jacob Baldwin in Scott’s Addition
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- New details have been released in court documents regarding the deadly assault of Jacob Baldwin that took place in Richmond's Scott's Addition neighborhood earlier this month. According to court documents obtained by 8News, a fight broke out in Scott's Addition on Saturday, Oct. 12 between 27-year-old Nico Rivera and 26-year-old Jacob Baldwin, where Baldwin sustained a life-threatening injury to the head from Rivera which resulted in his death several days later. Rivera turned himself in at Richmond Police headquarters on Saturday, Oct. 19, and was charged with second-degree murder in connection to Baldwin's death. Three other persons of interest who may have information relating to the case have recently been identified and contacted by detectives with the Richmond Police Department. Court documents allege that an initial altercation between Baldwin and Rivera took place at the corner of West Marshall Street and North Sheppard Street, but they were separated by friends. "The suspect [Rivera] then re-engaged by advancing forward and striking the victim [Baldwin] with a punch to the head/face which caused the victim to fall back on the pavement, striking the back of the head," a criminal complaint in connection to the case reads. As a result of a bond hearing that took place in Richmond City General District Court on Tuesday, Oct. 22, Rivera was issued a $15,000 bond. The conditions of his bond include Home Electronic Monitoring (HEM) -- the requirement for Rivera to remain in his home with a GPS monitoring device attached to himself. Rivera has a bond appeal hearing in Richmond City Circuit Court on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 9 a.m., a preliminary hearing is set for Rivera's case in Richmond City General District Court on Dec. 5, 2024.
