New security system to be implemented at 2 Cumberland schools

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A new security system will be implemented at two Cumberland County schools, effective on March 23, according to the district.

In a message sent to Cumberland County Middle and High School families, Cumberland County Public Schools superintendent Missy Shores announced it will implement a new security system -- "OpenGate Weapons Detection System" -- at the main entryways of both schools and selected athletic events and games, effective the week of March 23, per a March 10 social post.

The district shared that the system, which uses sensor technology and artificial intelligence, is a modern, contactless weapons detection platform designed to enhance safety while allowing individuals to move quickly and efficiently through entry points.

All students and visitors will walk through the detection lanes when they enter the building or attend games, the division said. Trained personnel will conduct a brief secondary screening when the system detects a possible concern.

"We ask that families allow a few extra minutes for arrival during the initial implementation period as everyone becomes familiar with the new process," the division wrote. "We appreciate your partnership and support as we continue to take proactive steps to ensure a safe and secure learning environment for all students."

Those with questions are urged to contact the school office.
