Not registered yet? Virginians can still cast their ballot on Election Day

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — It’s not too late to make your voice heard in Virginia’s statewide election. Even if you haven’t registered to vote, you can still cast your ballot on Election Day through same-day registration.

Voters who are not already registered to vote can go to their assigned polling place on Election Day -- Tuesday, Nov. 4 -- and fill out a provisional ballot. Those ballots aren’t counted immediately, as election officials first confirm the voter’s eligibility before including them in official totals.

To vote, you will need to bring a valid form of ID, which can include a driver’s license, state ID card, or even a current utility bill with your name and address.

Polls across Virginia will be open on Election Day from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Anyone standing in line by 7 p.m. will still be allowed to vote.

This year’s election will determine who leads Virginia for the next four years — including the next governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general.

  • Governor: Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former member of Congress, faces Republican Winsome Earle-Sears, the current lieutenant governor.
  • Lieutenant Governor: Democrat Ghazala F. Hashmi is running against Republican John Reid.
  • Attorney General: Incumbent Republican Jason S. Miyares is seeking re-election against Democrat Jay Jones, a former state delegate.
