Number of crashes dropping after weekend winter storm, VSP says
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The number of car crashes has dropped dramatically after this past weekend's winter storm, according to Virginia State Police (VSP).
About 500 crashes were reported statewide amid a powerful snow and ice storm that hit Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 24 and Sunday, Jan. 25, according to VSP. Between the afternoons of Monday, Jan. 26 and Tuesday, Jan. 27, VSP reported about 100. Some of these crashes were weather-related and some were not.
VSP is still asking for drivers to stay home if they can, so the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) can make all roads -- including the neighborhood streets -- passable as quickly as possible.
"VDOT is working hard to get the secondary and subdivision roads, but it takes time. There is a lot of now and a lot of ice. Unlike many storms that we have here, it's not warming up to melt," said VSP spokesperson Matt Demlein.

Those who are involved in a car crash should dial #77 for the non-emergency line. Demlein recommends drivers stock up on blankets, kitty litter or sand and other emergency supplies.
As another weekend storm may come through Central Virginia this weekend, Demlein said VSP is monitoring the forecasts and will adjust resources to respond as we get closer to that time.
