‘Particularly disturbing’: Halifax man charged after teenage girl found dead at Richmond boat landing
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A 19-year-old Halifax man has been charged with murder after a teenage girl was found dead at a Richmond boat landing on the James River in April.
At 10:05 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, officers with the Richmond Police Department were called for a report of a person down at Ancarrow's Landing on Brander Street.
When officers arrived, they found an unidentified 17-year-old girl from Chesterfield County down and unresponsive in a wooded area with a gunshot wound. She died on the scene.
According to police, 19-year-old Austin Akers Reid of Halifax was taken into custody in April for charges of robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a robbery.
Police confirmed on May 13 that he is now being charged with murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a murder and concealing a dead body. A spokesperson added that the teenager and Reid knew one another.
During the investigation, the detectives determined that this murder was related to another incident that occurred the day before on West Broad Street.
At 6:38 a.m., police were called for a suspicious situation report that took place at a parking deck at the 2000 block of West Broad Street. Police responded and collected evidence that connected back to the homicide at Ancarrow's Landing.
“Detectives determined this was a tragic case involving known parties which was not connected to other investigations,” said Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards. “Yet, it was particularly disturbing to the public due to the location of the final crime scene. I applaud the swift arrest and charges in this investigation.”
