Person fighting for their life after being shot in vehicle on Route 1 in Chesterfield County

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A person is fighting for their life after police said they were shot in a vehicle on Route 1 in Chesterfield County Tuesday evening.

The shooting occurred in the 11400 block of Route 1 at 11:57 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, according to the Chesterfield County Police Department.

Officials said a Toyota Highlander was heading south on Route 1 when a person in the vehicle was shot. The vehicle reportedly crossed into the northbound lanes and stopped on the side of the northbound lane.

The person shot was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

"There is no threat to the public," police said.

Route 1 was closed between Rio Vista Street and Shields Road in both directions.
