Person hurt, multiple families without homes after fire in Albemarle

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A person is hurt and multiple families are without homes after a fire in Albemarle County on Thursday.

Just before 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26, crews with Albemarle County Fire Rescue were called to the 3300 block of Cardinal Hill Lane for report of a fire alarm.

When they arrived, firefighters discovered smoke in one unit.

The person inside that unit, as well as those in neighboring units, were all able to get out before crews arrived.

One adult was hurt in the fire. They had minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

A total of four units were impacted by the fire's damage. Fire officials did not say exactly how many residents were displaced, but all are being assisted by property management.

Three charged with trafficking Mexican agricultural workers into forced labor on farms in Virginia and other states

The fire was determined to be accidental and caused by cooking grease, according to the Albemarle County Fire Marshal's Office.

"Albemarle County Fire Rescue would like to take this opportunity to remind the community to never leave cooking operations unattended," officials said. "If a fire starts, immediately cover the pan with a lid to smother flames and turn off the burner. Using water on a grease fire can cause it to become explosive and spread flames."
