Person in hospital after fire in Petersburg apartment building

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- A person is in the hospital after a fire began in the kitchen of a Petersburg apartment building on Wednesday morning.

At around 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, Petersburg Fire units were dispatched to a three-story masonry apartment building at 200 Cavalier Drive for a reported structure fire.

When fire officials arrived on scene, they set a fan to move the smoke and improve visibility. They then conducted a primary search with one engine. According to officials, occupants were able to exit the building safely.

The fire reportedly began in the kitchen, leading to cabinets catching fire, before sprinklers knocked the flames out.

A person was taken to the local hospital for treatment. However, officials did not say what the status of this person's injuries was. No other injuries were reported.
