Petersburg National Battlefield tour road to remain closed through late October
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Months after severe flooding hit the Central Virginia area in July, closing roads and causing widespread damage, the Petersburg National Battlefield is still trying to repair one of its major tour roads that was impacted.
Petersburg National Battlefield -- a historic site related to the Siege of Petersburg during the Civil War -- is located near Petersburg and its acres span multiple localities, including Prince George and Dinwiddie counties, as well as the city of Hopewell.
Petersburg and its surrounding areas were among those hit especially hard by severe flooding on Monday, July 14.
On Thursday, Sept. 18, the Petersburg National Battlefield announced that the Eastern Front Tour Road south of Route 36 would remain closed, likely through October, due to scheduled maintenance and repairs following the severe flooding that damaged a road and multiple trails.

According to officials, while the tour road is open to pedestrians and bicyclists, there may be temporary closures for everyone when crews are addressing sinkholes, resurfacing or restriping the pavement.
The Petersburg National Battlefield said the trail system will stay open, with access points at Hickory Hill and Eastern Front Visitor Center, per a Sept. 18 press release. The visitor center is expected to close for a few days in mid-October during scheduled parking lot improvements.
"Your cooperation is essential," officials said. "Please follow all posted signs and the directions of flaggers during this work. All projects are outdoors, weather-dependent and subject to change."
