Petersburg police chase leads to school lockdowns

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Petersburg High School will have an increased police presence on Friday after an incident that occurred the night before. Petersburg Police were active in the afternoon on Thursday, Nov. 21 following reports of a stolen vehicle and potentially armed suspects, resulting in school lockdowns and a significant police presence. The situation unfolded near Petersburg High School, where school officials alerted police that several students were suspected of stealing a car and possessing weapons outside the campus. The school was placed under a shelter-in-place order for 10 minutes until dismissal, but officers remained on-site for the rest of the school day. The Petersburg school system posted on Facebook that they later learned a vehicle was involved in a police chase just a few minutes from Cool Spring Elementary School. This incident prompted a lockdown at the elementary school as well, and neighbors were advised to stay inside their homes Thursday night. Police said that at 4:30 p.m., officers concentrated their search on the area of Halifax and Custer streets. By the end of the operation, four individuals were arrested and the area was deemed safe at 9:30 p.m. Police have not released further details regarding the suspects or any remaining threats.
