Petersburg Police recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month
PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time during which the Petersburg Bureau of Police is spreading awareness and sharing resources.
In a social media post on Thursday, Oct. 8, Petersburg Police Chief Travis Christian noted that domestic violence is not just a private issue, adding that it's a public concern that affects families, neighborhoods and the safety of the city.
"As an agency, we've seen firsthand the devastating consequences of domestic violence and its lifelong impact on survivors, and their families, and our community," Christian said in the post. "We stand in support of those who have bravely survived and now use their voices to raise awareness and inspire change."
Christian reminded residents that they are not alone. He said the Petersburg Bureau of Police is committed to protecting survivors, holding offenders accountable and working with community partners to provide resources and support.
He urged those who want to seek help to do so through organizations such as the James House, which serves the Tri-Cities area with shelter, counseling and advocacy.
Petersburg residents are invited to attend local events, supporting services or starting conversations.
"Together, we build a safer, more compassionate Petersburg," Christian said.
