RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- 8News partnered with non-profit organization, 2 End the Stigma on Saturday to co-host the eighth annual "A Night for Scott" -- an event that aims to help those who are struggling with substance use disorder.
There were two familiar faces at the 80s themed event, which took place at the John Marshall Ballroom from 6 to 10 p.m. 8News' own Deanna Albrittin and Matt DiNardo came out to support the cause and help spread awareness about those impacted by substance use disorder.
2 End the Stigma is an organization founded by Jill Cichowicz in honor of her twin brother Scott who died due to fentanyl poisoning back in 2017.
The funds raised throughout the night not only help support those who are struggling, but help educate people in the community about addiction and the stigma that surrounds it.
8News got the chance to speak with Jaime Puerta, President and Co-Founder of Victims of Illicit Drugs (VOID) a California based non-profit, about how he has been impacted by a loved one that struggled with addiction.
"My son made a mistake, he made a mistake and it cost him his life," Puerta said. "Children are supposed to learn from their mistakes they're not supposed to die from them."
