CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Chesterfield County firefighters fished a runaway gangway from the James River in Richmond on Thursday, ensuring it could finally return to Robious Landing Park after it was swept away last week.

According to Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation, in anticipation of heavy rainfall the week of Monday, May 12, the gangway to the dock at Robious Landing Park in Chesterfield was removed from said dock and taken higher inland.

However, the James River swelled higher than expected and stole the gangway anyway, sending it downriver the morning of Thursday, May 15.

A search for the missing gangway began. It was later found that same evening and secured "until it can be safely removed."

That time came on Thursday, May 22, with Chesterfield County Fire and EMS' Scuba Rescue Team heading down to Richmond to see it done.

The team entered the water, retrieved the gangway and brought it to the riverbank so it could be lifted out via a crane.
