HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) — A thriller NBA matchup wasn't the only thing that took center court at the Capital One Arena last week.

A group of Hopewell students performed during halftime at the Washington Wizards game against the Utah Jazz in the country's capital on March 5, according to Hopewell City Public Schools.

The "Weapons of Mass Percussion," a Hopewell High School band, featured students in grades 6 through 12. Band director Adres Pierce said staff and band members rehearsed to perform "at a high level."

"It took us a few weeks to get the show down and perfected to our group's performance standards," Pierce said.

But last Thursday night wasn't the band's first time at a Wizards game. The group started performing at the Wizard's halftime since spring 2024, said band director Andres Pierce.

"One day, I received a call from a Wizards representative who needed a group to perform at halftime at one of their games, since one of the groups had backed out at the last minute," Pierce said. "I've always wanted to have a group to perform for the NBA, and this was just God's timing."
