HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Four years after his tragic death, Henrico County continues to honor the memory of a 24-year-old police officer who was killed in the line of duty.
On Tuesday, March 31, the Henrico County Police Division, alongside family members and friends, held a wreath-laying ceremony for the fallen officer Trey M. Sutton, who died a day after a driver ran a red light and crashed into his cruiser on March 30, 2022.
"Today, we remember the sacrifice he gave for this community," police said in a Facebook post. "Ready easy brother, we have the watch."
Sutton had just recently graduated from the police academy at the time of his death. He left behind many loved ones — including his fiancée, Zoe Pierson. He died three months before he was meant to marry her.

The night of this tragic crash, Sutton, fellow officer Greg Petrohovich and a person in their custody were driving on Wilkinson Road.

As Sutton drove into the intersection of Wilkinson and Chamberlayne roads, a Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by 18-year-old Jeffrey Adam Lankford crashed into his patrol car after running a red light at high speed.
Sutton and his two passengers were all seriously injured. While Petrohovich and the person in their custody ultimately survived, Sutton died in the hospital on March 31, 2022.
Lankford pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in 2023 as part of an Alford Plea and was sentenced to two years in prison, with one year and 10 months suspended. His reckless driving charge was dropped.
Tuesday's wreath-laying ceremony is the fourth such ceremony Henrico Police has held for Sutton.
