Pocahontas State Park features birdwatching, geocaching for National Hobby Month
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Looking for new hobbies to try in the new year? You're in luck! Pocahontas State Park is offering visitors a fun way to explore nature with new activities each week of January.
Starting on Jan. 4, community members are invited to stop by the park at 10301 State Park Road and try out a different hobby each week during National Hobby Month.
These activities include birdwatching on Jan. 4, composting on Jan. 11, hiking on Jan. 18 and geocaching on Jan. 25.
Ranger Jimmy King said this week, visitors can learn about six different ways to identify birds at the park.

"It's to get you outside. These are all hobbies that you can do at Pocahontas State Park," King said.
King said for the week of Jan. 25, families can participate in geocaching by using GPS coordinates to find a hidden box. When participants find the box, they can leave their names in a journal that records everyone who's ever found it.
"If you bring something with you, you can also leave it for the next person," King said.
Folks interested in participating in the hobbies can stop by the park's visitor center and explore these activities in nature at their own pace.
"It's all self-guided, so it's pretty accessible for all ages. It allows people to come out with their families -- they can go outside, do bird watching with each other and build a sense of community, too," King said.
