Powerball drawing grows to about $1.7 billion as four Virginia Lottery tickets each win $50,000

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- With another day without a clear winner during Wednesday night's drawing, the Powerball jackpot grew to about $1.7 billion.

According to a Sept. 4 release from the Virginia Lottery, 175,766 Lottery tickets were reportedly bought in Virginia the previous day on Wednesday, Sept. 3. Of those tickets, four tickets purchased in the state each won $50,000 -- one more ticket than Saturday night's drawing.

Due to another drawing without a ticket in the U.S. matching all six numbers, the jackpot for Saturday, Sept. 6, has grown to about $1.7 billion.

Four tickets each matched four of the first five winning numbers plus the Powerball number:

  • Elk Creek Country Store, 5224 Kentucky Springs Road in Bumpass
  • Stop In Food Store, 856 Burks Hill Road in Bedford
  • Wawa, 9471 Liberia Avenue in Manassas
  • Online using the Virginia Lottery app

Ahead of Wednesday's drawing, the Powerball jackpot increased to an estimated $1.4 billion.

Profits from every Powerball ticket bought in Virginia, by law, go to K-12 public education in Virginia, making up about 10% of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget, according to the Virginia Lottery.
