Race to be Virginia Democrats’ lieutenant governor nominee currently too close to call
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The race to become the Democratic nominee for Virginia's next lieutenant governor is currently too close to call, with two candidates neck-and-neck.
A total of six candidates were on Virginians' ballots during the primary elections on Tuesday, June 17. However, as the unofficial results from the Virginia Department of Elections come in, former Richmond mayor Levar Stoney and Sen. Ghazala Hashmi (D-Chesterfield) have emerged as the frontrunners.
As of about 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Hashmi has 27.60% of the vote and Stoney has 27.29% -- meaning they are less than 1% apart.
Their closest competitor, Sen. Aaron Rouse (D-Virginia Beach), is still multiple points behind them at 25.36% of the vote.

A total of 123 precincts out of 133 have reported their results, meaning 10 still need to submit final vote tallies.
All election results are unofficial until certified. If the results remain this close, the race could potentially be recalled by whoever ends up with the fewest votes between Hashmi and Stoney -- and if the difference between them remains under 1%, the state of Virginia will foot the bill for said recall.
