Racoon gets drunk, wrecks ABC store; now he’s on a T-shirt

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Hanover County officials have launched a limited-edition T-shirt campaign inspired by the drunken raccoon that broke into and ransacked an Ashland ABC store.

The Hanover County Animal Protection & Shelter announced the "Ashland Drunk Raccoon" T-shirts -- which read "Trashed Panda" -- inspired by a local raccoon celebrity who broke into the ABC store in Hanover's Ashland area

Animal control officers said a raccoon helped itself to bottles of alcohol before passing out in the store bathroom. The animal was found face down next to the toilet the morning of Saturday, Nov. 30.

The raccoon had left behind a trail of broken bottles, ransacked shelves and a cleanup crew was left scratching their heads.

"While this raccoon gave us all a much-needed laugh, our officers handle hundreds of calls each year involving wildlife, stray animals, and emergencies requiring specialized training and equipment," the Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter wrote in the Dec. 3 social post. "Your support helps us continue providing compassionate, professional service to both animals and residents of Hanover County."

The unusual celebrity has garnered an overwhelming response from the community, going viral across the U.S. and making national headlines.

Hanover officials partnered with Bonfire and launched a limited-edition T-shirt inspired by the raccoon.

Proceeds from the sales will go toward the following:

  • Shelter animal care and enrichment
  • Field officer training
  • Equipment needed to ensure safe and humane response to wildlife calls, including the ones who occasionally party a little too hard
