RIC says they’re ‘fortunate’ for sufficient TSA staffing amid partial government shutdown
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond International Airport said Transportation Security Administration (TSA) staffing has not affected wait times despite the partial government shutdown.
The partial government shutdown began on Feb. 14. Since then, more than 400 TSA officers have quit their jobs with many travelers experiencing longer wait times nationwide.
Vince Wilson is a frequent flyer who says he travels 10 to 15 times a month for his job and applauded TSA workers for their hard work.
“Richmond's been phenomenal,” said Wilson. “The few times I've flown in Richmond the last two weeks, I haven't been in trouble with them, and they've been pretty good.”
RIC spokesperson Troy Bell said checkpoints have been consistent with seasonal expectations like spring break and holidays like March and April.
RIC has not seen U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents providing security support “so far,” said Bell, despite President Donald Trump’s announcement on Sunday.
Bell also said the recommended arrival time for travelers hasn’t changed during the partial shutdown. Wilson hopes other travelers can appreciate the job they’re still doing under tough circumstances.
“I think as a customer, we should understand that. Some of these folks have shown up not getting paid. I don't know if I could do it, but you got to give credit to the Richmond folks who are coming and doing their jobs and helping protect us every single day,” Bell said.
8News reached out to TSA for numbers on staff members who have decided not to work during the partial shutdown and say they won’t be able to answer questions until it’s over.
