RIC warns travelers of detours, closures amid construction
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- As construction has begun at Richmond International Airport's (RIC) Center Core Plaza, travelers are being warned of potential detours and road closures.
In addition to detours within hourly parking garages, RIC officials said that starting Tuesday, Jan. 27, one of the roads connecting the North and South hourly parking garages will be closed until June 2026.
If either garage reaches capacity, detours will be put in place to direct travelers.
The Center Core Plaza project will include new pavement and landscaping plantings installed in the wedge-shaped parking area between garages.
Some additional improvements feature updated storm drainage, site lighting and furnishings, walkways and pet relief areas, as well as infrastructure to set up future EV charging stations, per a release.
The focus point of the area will be a 24-foot-tall sculpture of a dogwood tree and three hummingbirds, courtesy of artist Matthew Mazzotta and titled "Travel Companions" -- RIC's first art installation.
Each of the hummingbirds was recently named through a social media vote, with Henry, Hollywood and Hummie Mae as the final choices.
