Richmond-based Baskervill to lead Library of Virginia’s renovation design
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Library of Virginia has selected Richmond-based architectural firm Baskervill to lead the design of its building renovation.
The multi-year project will renovate 112,749 square feet on the first and second floors at the library's 800 E. Broad St. location.
Per a press release, the redesign will help improve the visitor experience and focus on accessibility, flexibility and community engagement at the library.
Boston-based architectural firm Shepley Bulfinch will join Baskervill to implement the redesign.
“We’re excited to work with Baskervill and Shepley Bulfinch to create spaces that inspire learning, foster connection and celebrate Virginia’s rich history,” said Librarian of Virginia Dennis T. Clark. “This renovation is about more than redesigning our physical space — it’s about enhancing our ability to exceed expectations of Virginians and all who engage with us in person and online.”

The renovation project will include upgrades to conference and event facilities, relocating the café space and the gift shop, reconfiguring reading rooms and enhancing exhibition areas, among other changes.
The project is currently in its planning phase, with pre-construction efforts continuing through 2027. Construction is slated for early 2028 and will take around two years and six months, per the release.
