Richmond City Hall raises Pride flag to show support for LGBTQ+ rights

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- With June marking Pride Month, the City of Richmond raised the Pride flag above City Hall on Friday, in support of the rights and dignity of the local LGBTQ+ community.
On Friday, May 30, Mayor Danny Avula and Richmond residents gathered outside City Hall to host the annual Pride Flag raising ceremony. The raising of the flag kicked off Pride Month and showed a commitment to LGBTQ+ residents, workers and visitors.
“Richmond stands proudly with our LGBTQ community not just in policy or symbolism, but in spirit," Avula said. "We will not go backward. We will continue to be a city where everyone belongs, no matter who they are or who they love.”

According to the city, leaders addressed the challenges of the recent trends in the nation, seeking to restrict the rights and protections of the LGBTQ+ community. The guest speakers expressed the commitment to ensuring equality of housing, jobs and public accommodations for all.
