Richmond cooling centers, libraries, and pools available during heatwave

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond residents are being urged to take precautions ahead of a major heat wave forecasted to begin Sunday, June 22, with temperatures expected to reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit and heat index values nearing 115.

City officials and local organizations have activated numerous resources to help residents stay safe during the extreme heat.

According to a press release from Richmond's City Council, the Salvation Army’s Inclement Weather Shelter at 1900 Chamberlayne Parkway will operate as a cooling center from Sunday through Wednesday, offering air-conditioned space, cold water, refreshments, and staff support. Hours vary daily, starting at 11 a.m.

The Richmond Department of Social Services will also provide walk-up cooling centers at Marshall Plaza at 900 E. Marshall Street, and Southside Plaza at 4100 Hull Street Road, open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

All Richmond Public Library branches will serve as additional cooling spaces during their regular business hours. Full library schedules can be found here.

Additionally, Richmond’s outdoor public pools will be open daily, offering relief from the heat between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. on weekdays and until 7 p.m. on weekends.

Officials encourage residents—particularly older adults, those with medical conditions, and individuals without reliable shelter—to use these resources. The Virginia Department of Social Services also has cooling assistance funds available through Aug. 15 via the CommonHelp portal.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and check on neighbors, especially those impacted by recent power outages.
