Richmond house fire claims lives of 70-year-old woman and 10-year-old boy

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond Fire Department is continuing to investigate after two people were killed in a fire on Saturday morning.

According to a release from the department, crews were called to the 1100 block of North 22nd Street for a reported residential structure fire at 8:52 a.m. on Dec. 13.

Upon their arrival, firefighters found heavy fire conditions and immediately began fire suppression operations.

Simultaneously, search-and-rescue efforts were launched, leading to crews finding a 70-year-old woman on the first floor. She pronounced dead at the scene.

A 10-year-old boy was found on the second floor a short time later and was also pronounced dead.

A third victim -- a 56-year-old man -- was taken to VCU Medical Center. According to authorities, the extent of his injuries are not available as of the time of this reporting.

According to the release, the fire caused exposure damage to adjacent homes.

"Fire crews will remain on scene for an extended period as operations continue," the release from Richmond Fire reads. "The incident remains under investigation."
