Richmond launches new emergency alert system

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – The City of Richmond has announced the launch of a new emergency alert system for residents, workers and visitors.

The emergency alert system is called Richmond Ready Alerts and is supposed to be an innovative system that sends out immediate and reliable notifications when a critical emergency or incident arises.

According to the City of Richmond, this alert system is powered by Everbridge, an American software company known for its critical event management services. It is going to replace the current alert system, Code Red.

Richmond Ready Alerts will reportedly keep residents of the city up to date about events that will impact the city, as well as:

  • Fires
  • Flooding
  • Severe weather
  • Missing persons
  • Power outages
  • Other crucial public safety updates

There are multiple ways users can receive alerts through emails -- such as text messages, landline phones or through the Everbridge app.

“In emergencies, having timely information can make all the difference, and Richmond Ready Alerts guarantees that users get real-time updates when they matter most,” said Stephen Willoughby, Director of Emergency Communications. “We strongly encourage anyone who lives, works, or frequently visits Richmond to sign up for alerts to stay connected during critical times.”
