Richmond man sentenced for illegally possessing 28 guns

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A Richmond man was sentenced on Thursday for being a felon in possession of 28 firearms, according to the Department of Justice.

According to court documents, on Dec. 26, 2023, officers with the Colonial Heights Police Department responded to the residence of 40-year-old Joshua Jernigan for an unrelated matter.

After receiving permission from Jernigan to search his residence, the officers reportedly saw a loaded pistol magazine in the garage.

Officials said the officers then obtained a warrant to search the residence and recovered 28 guns and five unregistered silencers.

According to the Department of Justice, Jernigan was convicted of conspiracy/statutory burglary, statutory burglary with intent and possession of burglarious tools in Chesterfield County in 2004.

As a previously convicted felon, Jernigan cannot legally possess firearms or ammunition. He was sentenced on Thursday, Feb. 13 to five years in prison for being a felon in possession of firearms.
