Richmond Police Department urges protestors to exercise their rights “safely and lawfully” ahead of “No Kings” protest

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- As protests continue nationwide, Richmonders are also taking to the streets Saturday, June 14, to protests as well. Richmond Police Department (RPD) is urging protestors to exercise their rights "safely and lawfully."

The "No Kings" protest as it's commonly referred to as, will be held June 14 at 6 p.m. at Bell Tower Capitol Square. Thousands of people have registered and are expected to participate in the protest.

According to a statement from RPD they want to remind the public that:

The Richmond Police Department works to protect and, indeed, facilitate the public right to safely demonstrate and to exercise rights to free expression. RPD urges the public to exercise these rights safely and lawfully.  Richmond Police Department

This reminder comes in time after a man drove his car "recklessly through a crowd," according to Culpeper Police Department.

21-year-old Joseph R. Checklick Jr, of Culpeper, Va. has been charged with Reckless Driving after law enforcement observed an SUV vehicle drive recklessly through a crowd of pedestrians on Saturday, June 14.

According to Culpeper Police, based on the preliminary investigation, it was determined that Checklick Jr. intentionally accelerated his vehicle into the dispersing crowd, striking at least one person with his vehicle.

The dispersing crowd was from a former "No Kings" protests, according to DC News now.
