Richmond Public School leaders react to deadly shooting involving John Marshall senior
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Police Department has identified a John Marshall High School senior, Sherrod Bosher, as the victim of a deadly shooting over Mother's Day weekend.
According to Richmond Police, they got a call about random gunfire at 2:15 a.m. on Sunday morning in the 600 block of South 2nd Street.
When officers arrived, they found a car damaged by bullets and heard that someone took a man with gunshot wounds to the hospital. That man was 18-year-old Bosher, who eventually died from his injuries.
Richmond Public School (RPS) superintendent Jason Kamras sent a statement saying:
“Amidst the joy of Mother’s Day weekend, RPS unfortunately experienced a heartbreaking tragedy. A John Marshall High School senior — just days away from graduation — was killed in a shooting incident. I have no words to express how devastating this news is for the student’s family, for Jayem, and for all of RPS. As we approach the end of the school year, please stay extra vigilant with the young people in your life. Keep them close. Every minute with them is so incredibly precious and they deserve to have thousands upon thousands more in the years ahead.” -- RPS superintendent Jason Kamras
School board member Dr. Shonda Harris-Muhammed also spoke on the matter on her Facebook page and said his death is “deeply felt across the community."
Sherrod, who was two weeks away from graduating, was a football player at John Marshall.
The team's Instagram account posted a photo and said quote “your legacy will live on in every heart you’ve inspired.”
8News spoke with a neighbor who lives in the area where the shooting happened about the tragedy.
“It's a little bit concerning,” said neighbor Merrill Cann. “There's a lot of good communities that we have around here. I was just watching two kids ride bikes down with their parents on this big hill. So, it’s a little concerning.”
RPD officials have not said who shot Bosher or how the shooting happened.
