Richmond Sheriff Antionette Irving re-elected in Democratic Primary

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmond Sheriff Antionette Irving has been re-elected by voters in the Democratic Primary on Tuesday, June 17.

According to the Virginia Department of Elections, Irving, the incumbent, won the Richmond Sheriff's Democratic Primary, earning 54.49% of votes, with 14,733 votes, as of reporting.

Her challenger, William J. Burnett, received 45.51% of votes, with 12,304 votes from Richmonders, as of the time of reporting.

Irving has won a third term, as she was first elected as Richmond's sheriff in 2017.

The Richmond City Justice Center, which Irving's office oversees, has come under fire due to a string of inmate deaths. An inmate died at the jail in early June, with their cause of death not yet known, according to officials.

This comes alongside Sen. Ghazala Hashmi (D-Chesterfield) being declared the Democratic nominee in the race for Virginia’s lieutenant governoraccording to the Associated Press.

In addition, former state delegate Jay Jones is set to be the Virginia Democrats’ candidate for attorney general, as per the Associated Press.
