Richmond tax rebate checks to be issued by June 30 after finance errors

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond residents still waiting for a tax rebate check will soon see their money in the mail after several errors slowed down the process.

The city's special property tax rebate program, approved in 2024, aims to act as a financial relief for residents as property values and housing costs rise. During the programs rollout in March, the city shared several issues that caused thousands of Richmonders to receive the wrong check or not receive one at all.

The city intended to send about 59,000 people rebate checks. Instead, about 8,300 checks were addressed to the wrong person and about 2,000 checks were sent to the wrong address. The city stopped all checks to fix the errors. When this happened, correctly issued checks bounced.

The errors prompted city councilmembers to share their frustrations about repeated errors within the finance department.

In May, the city released an update on the rebate check distribution timeline outlining that the check printing process and mailing would start on June 17th and all Richmonders should receive their rebate check in the mail by June 30. According to a city spokesperson, the city is on schedule to issue these checks by this timeline.

The city's auditor's office was tasked to look into what went wrong. Those findings have yet to be released.
