Richmond to participate in annual statewide tornado drill

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmond's City Hall will participate in the statewide tornado drill on Tuesday as part of Virginia Severe Weather Awareness Week.

The week spans from March 9 through March 13. Ahead of the week, Richmond's Office of Emergency Management reminded residents that preparedness is important all year round, from severe storms to winter weather and extreme heat.

City Hall will reportedly participate in the statewide tornado drill at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10, during which city employees will practice emergency procedures and ensure a coordinated response in the event of a tornado drill.

In a press release shared by the city on Friday, March 6, city officials said preparedness drills like this one are one of several steps city personnel take throughout the year to prepare for severe weather events.

“Tornado warnings often leave little time to react,” said Stephen Willoughby, director of the Department of Emergency Communications, Preparedness and Response. “These drills allow us to strengthen our ability to respond quickly and ensure City employees understand their roles and can take immediate protective action.”

The city encouraged residents to review their own emergency plans and sign up for Richmond Ready Alerts to receive critical emergency and weather alerts from the city.

Residents can text "RVAREADY" to 888-777 to receive a sign-up link or visit the city's website to learn more.
