Riverside Regional Jail officer arrested for drug smuggling

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Riverside Regional Jail officer was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly delivering drugs to a prisoner, according to a release from the facility.

On Wednesday, Sept. 10, the Prince George County Police Department arrested Akiylah Taylor for conspiracy to deliver drugs to a prisoner, per court records.

However, it's unclear what the substances were.

"This is a deeply troubling breach of trust," said Colonel Jeffrey Dillman. "Introducing contraband into a correctional facility endangers not only the lives of inmates but also the safety of our staff. We have zero tolerance for such behavior and we will pursue every avenue to ensure accountability."

Per a release, the Prince George Police Department led the investigation that led to Taylor's arrest, with help from the Riverside Office of Professional Review. The investigation revealed that Taylor allegedly conspired to introduce drugs into the facility, a crime that "undermines the integrity of correctional operations and poses serious risks to institutional safety," per the release.

"We are committed to maintaining a secure and rehabilitative environment," said Dillman. "Any action that compromises that mission will be met with swift and decisive consequences."

Dillman said the facility will continue working with law enforcement agencies and internal oversight to "prevent these breaches. He further highlighted his commitment to "safety, transparency and justice," which he said "remains unwavering."

Taylor's next scheduled court appearance is at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 3.
