Roughly 725,000 gallons of sewage discharged into Hoskins Creek from Tappahannock wastewater treatment plant

ESSEX COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Roughly 725,000 gallons of "partially treated sewage" were discharged into Hoskins Creek in the town of Tappahannock after lightning struck its wastewater treatment plant on Wednesday. Repairs were reportedly completed over the weekend.

According to the Virginia Department of Health, when repairs were completed, roughly 750,000 gallons of partially treated sewage were discharged into Hoskins Creek from the town of Tappahannock's wastewater treatment plant, located at 400 Mill Rd.

This comes after lightning struck the plant, causing an equipment failure on Wednesday, July 9. A recreational swimming advisory was issued on Thursday, July 10, after the discharge of sewage into the creek and the Rappahannock River.

VDH said it received notice along with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and Three Rivers Health District that the necessary repairs to the wastewater treatment plant were completed over the weekend, and there is no longer sewage being discharged.

The department is reportedly awaiting lab results before any decisions are made regarding the recreational swimming advisory.
