Safety tips to keep in mind as Chesterfield responders see increase in slip-and-fall injuries
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Following the winter storm that caused icy conditions around Virginia, Chesterfield responders have seen an increase in slip-and-fall injuries. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind.
In the afternoon on Tuesday, Jan. 27, Chesterfield County announced on social media that the county's Emergency Communications Center was seeing an increase in slip-and-fall injuries due to icy conditions.
Even when sidewalks, driveways and parking lots do not look slick, the county said they may still be dangerous.
If you have to leave home, the county reminded residents to take the following steps:
- Walk slowly and carefully, like a penguin, slow with your arms out
- Wear shoes with good traction
- Use handrails when available
- Avoid shaded areas where ice can be harder to spot
If possible, though, the county reminded residents to stay home, as avoiding unnecessary travel helps reduce strain on emergency responders following the storm.
