Scam alert: New Kent County warns residents on jury duty scam

NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- New Kent County is warning residents on a new jury duty scam circulating the area.

According to a post from the county, scammers are posing as New Kent County Sherriff's deputies and claim that, "you have an outstanding arrest warrant for missing jury duty."

The scams will then ask to, "meet for payment," in order to clear the warrant.

Here are some reminders the county Sheriff's Office wants to remind residents of the following:

  • The New Kent Sheriff’s Office will NEVER call or text you to demand payment or request gift cards, wire transfers, or Venmo and Cash App transactions.
  • Do not meet anyone claiming to be an officer for the purpose of paying a fine.
  • If you receive a suspicious call like this, hang up immediately and contact us directly at 804-966-9500 to verify.

"Help us spread the word and protect others from falling victim to this scam," added the County.
