Scam alert: Powhatan County warns residents against fake invoice emails

POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Powhatan County is warning residents against fraudulent invoice emails demanding residents to pay a fee by wiring money to a bank account.

In a recent post, the county said that they have been made aware of the scam email that have been circulating which claim to be from Powhatan County.

"These emails may appear convincing, sometimes referencing real projects, permits, or current events. However, they are not legitimate communications from Powhatan County," stated the County.

Reminders:

  • Powhatan County will never request payments via wire transfer through unsolicited email.
  • Always check a senders email address carefully
    • Official accounts end in @powhatanva.gov.
  • If you receive a suspicious message, do not respond or send money.

What should you do if you receive one?

  • Contact the appropriate department directly by using the official contact information on the Powhatan County website.
  • You can reach out to Powhatan County via Facebook, call the Treasurer’s Office or the County Administration Office for verification.
  • If you believe you have sent money or fallen victim to a scam contact the sheriff's office through the non-emergency line at 804-598-5656.

The county is urging residents to stay cautious and when in doubt, reach out to them directly.
