Second confirmed rabies case in Henrico County for 2026, dogs potentially exposed

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Henrico County Police Division has confirmed the second case of rabies in the county in 2026 after a raccoon tested positive, potentially exposing two dogs.

On Tuesday, Jan. 27, officers with the Henrico County Police Division responded to the 8400 block of Hastings Mill Lane for a report of a potential rabies exposure involving two dogs and a raccoon.

According to a release, the raccoon was submitted to the State Lab and tested positive for rabies.

The dogs were quarantined on the owner's property due to the potential contact between the dogs and the raccoon.

"There were no additional animal or human exposures reported," officers wrote in a release.

This marks the second rabies case after a raccoon tested positive for rabies in early January.

The police division shared the following dates for clinics this year:

  • From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, at the Eastern Henrico Government Center, located at 3820 Nine Mile Road
  • From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Western Henrico Government Center, located at 4301 E. Parham Road
