‘Shopping cart killer’ found guilty of two murders in Virginia

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The man that police have dubbed the "shopping cart killer" was convicted of several charges in connection to two slayings that occurred in Rockingham County in 2021.

After a four-day jury trial that began on Jan. 27, 2025, Anthony Robinson was convicted of the following charges in Rockingham County Circuit Court:

  • Two counts of first-degree murder
  • Two counts of concealing a dead body
  • Two counts of aggravated murder

The charges stem from two incidents involving the killings of Beth Redmon, 54, of Harrisonburg and Tonita Smith, 39, of Charlottesville.

Investigators used cellphone records and video surveillance footage to determine that Robinson had contacted his victims through dating apps, convinced them to meet him in motels, then killed them and moved their bodies using shopping carts and blankets.

Authorities have accused Robinson in at least two other killings out of Washington D.C. and Fairfax County but he has not been charged in either instance.

Robinson is scheduled for a sentencing hearing on Sept. 17, 2025.
