South Elementary School students hit a home run with reading challenge at The Diamond

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- With spring season comes baseball season and excitement for reading a book outside.

Students at South Elementary School in Prince George County have hit a home run after heading out to The Diamond in Richmond for a Flying Squirrels-connected reading challenge on Tuesday, as part of School Library Month.

The South Stars went out to see the Flying Squirrels' players on Tuesday, April 15, with over 160 students completing the baseball bookmark challenge, and nearly 80 students attended the mid-week game. This came two months after the team gave students a bookmark and a reading goal in February, according to South Elementary Librarian Tiffany Maxwell.

In February, the mascot visited the cafeteria in the elementary school, where students were given a goal to read eight books and color in a baseball on their bookmark to be given a free ticket to a Flying Squirrels game in March, the school division said in a release.

On Tuesday, the Richmond minor-league baseball team faced off against the Chesapeake Baysox, while students participated in the field parade and took photos with the mascot Nuztsy.

This is not the school's only creative venture. In March, children's book author David Gorman, known for writing "Waldameer Mystery Files," visited the elementary school.
