Spanberger sworn in, preaches unity in inaugural address

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - It’s a new day in Virginia politics as Spanberger is sworn into office as Virginia's next governor.

“It is the honor of my life to stand before you and take the oath today,” said Gov. Abigail Spanberger moments after taking the oath of office as Virginia’s 75th Governor on Saturday, Jan. 17.

Spanberger has made history as Virginia’s first female governor.

“I maintain an abiding sense of gratitude to those who worked generation after generation to ensure women could be among those casting ballots, but who could only dream of a day like today,” Spanberger said in her inaugural address.

Spanberger preached a message of unity in her address to the crowd gathered in Capitol Square.

“My fellow Virginians, as we set an example for the country, and the world, and most importantly, for our children, let us choose to stand united. Choose to serve one another. Choose to act together,” said Spanberger.

Spanberger promised to work every day on issues that matter to Virginians, such as affordability, education and more.

“We will write this next chapter together, because throughout our history, no leader has ever made progress alone,” said Spanberger.

Spanberger also thanked outgoing Gov. Glenn Youngkin and outgoing First Lady Suzanne Youngkin for their help during the transition, as well as their service to Virginia.
