State senator Mark Peake to step down as chairman of Republican Party of Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- State senator Mark Peake, who represents Lynchburg, has announced his decision to step down as chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia.

A letter obtained by 8News on Dec. 2, which was shared with Republican leaders, announced Peake's decision to step down as chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia at the end of 2025.

Peake stated in the letter that he will continue serving in the State Senate, and that the decision to step down came after "much reflection, prayer and conversations with [his] family."

Peake also said in the letter that he will be "fully engrossed" in the legislative session, fighting against Democrat-led redistricting legislation, and said his choice to step down leaves room for new chairman who would be able to devote their full time and energy to "[defeat] this referendum."

The letter is available in full below.
