StormTracker 8: Blustery winds and storms today

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - Today is a VIPIR ALERT Day due to the potential for damaging winds across central Virginia. A strong line of showers and storms will move in mid morning through early afternoon. We are also still watching the potential for a significant winter storm to move in by midweek.

A strong line of showers and storms are moving through the area and will continue to push west to east.

A few rumbles of thunder are possible, but the main threat will be damaging wind gusts. Sustained winds today will range from 10-20mph with gusts as strong as 40-50mph. On top of the already saturated grounds, downed trees and power lines are possible which could lead to power outages.

Any lingering showers look to move offshore by this evening and some of us will see a few breaks of sun. Highs today will be in the middle to upper 60s.

Tomorrow will be cooler with highs in the middle 40s with mostly sunny skies. Partly sunny skies continue for Tuesday with highs in the middle to upper 40s.

A VIPIR ALERT is still in effect for Wednesday and Thursday as a winter storm moves in. Weather models have been consistent with indicating a significant winter storm moving in by Wednesday bringing snow to most of the area. Models have been trending colder which would mean less mixing for us and more snow. As we get closer to the event we will have a better idea on where exactly the rain/snow line will move which accumulations are dependent on.

The storm looks to move out by midday on Thursday, but we will still see poor conditions on the roads. Temperatures stay chilly for the end of the week with highs only in the upper 30s.

Next weekend looks nice, but chilly right now with highs in the upper 30s to low 40s.
