StormTracker 8: Likely rain, possible strong storms tomorrow
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - Lots to discuss as we close out 2024 and begin the new year of 2025 in our Central Virginia weather forecast. Continue reading below. Our Saturday night into Sunday morning, calls for mild temperatures overnight, only getting down to near 50 degrees early in the overnight period under mostly cloudy to cloudy skies and lingering sprinkles and showers remaining possible. Also watch out for possible patchy fog in spots on Sunday morning, as you head out the door for any Sunday morning activities. Sunday for the second half of this current weekend, will be very mild, with afternoon temperatures rising to around 70 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. Likely rain, along with possible strong thunderstorms are on the way, in association with our next storm system, a strong surface cold front slated to sweep through by Sunday night. The approximate timing of the rain and storms tomorrow is 2 p.m. through 10 p.m. from west to east. The primary threats we are concerned about are heavy downpours, leading to localized ponding on roadways and damaging wind gusts leading to isolated power outages and tree damage. Aside from all of that, tomorrow will be a breezy day as well, with sustained winds of 5 to 20 mph, with gusts of 30 to 45 mph from time to time possible as well. Rainfall accumulations from the current storm system and our Sunday storm system will add up to around a half inch to an inch and a half across the viewing area, which is very beneficial rain considering our ongoing drought situation. Monday will be a nicer day than our Sunday, under mostly sunny skies and high temperatures in the lower 60s, so get outside if you can on Monday. Tuesday is New Years Eve Day, and it comes with our next storm system, bringing afternoon and evening rain showers to Central Virginia under partly sunny skies and high temperatures in the middle 60s. Wednesday is New Years Day, and it will be a cooler day with highs in the middle 50s under mostly sunny skies and breezy conditions. Thursday and Friday of next week will be cool days with highs in the middle to upper 40s both afternoons under partly cloudy skies and breezy conditions. Finally, next weekend, turns chilly, with well below average afternoon temperatures and dry conditions.
