StormTracker8: Mild Sunday; VIPIR Alert Monday for severe storms

Richmond, Va (WRIC) -- Temperatures today will be in the mid to upper 60s and clouds will increase. We could see a spotty shower or two this afternoon before they become more scattered in nature this evening and overnight.

A VIPIR alert is in place for Monday. Highs will be mild in the low 70s. Throughout the morning skies will be cloudy, but the afternoon and evening is being closely watched.

Starting around 2:00pm strong to severe thunderstorms will be making their way into the region from west to east. These storms will be widespread and will last until around 9:00pm.

The biggest threat Central Virginia is the risk for damaging winds. This stands at a 60% risk, meaning nearly 60% of storms that form have the chance to produce damaging winds of 58mph or greater.

We do also have the risk of both hail and tornadoes with these storms. The tornado threat currently stands at 15%, meaning that 15% of storms that form have the chance to produce a tornado. This is The hail threat is the least of the threats ranging from 5% (north and east of the metro) to 15% (south and west of the metro).

With severe storms bringing along the threats of damaging winds of 58mph or greater, 1" hail or greater, and even the threat for tornados. It's important to have a plan and to have a safe space to go to for when the storms arrive. When watches or warnings are issued you will want to be prepared.

Following the storms, Tuesday, St. Patrick's Day, will be sunny yet chilly with highs only in the mid 40s. You will want to bring those coats out one last time! Similar conditions will be with us for Wednesday with just a few more clouds.

Normal conditions return on Thursday with highs back in the upper 50s and mostly sunny skies.

The Spring season will officially begin on Friday at 10:46am. Highs will be comfortable in the mid 60s and partly sunny skies will be overhead.

Starting off our weekend, Saturday will feature temperatures in the upper 60s under partly sunny skies. Sunday will have more sun, but temperatures will take a small dip to near 60.
